How to Apply for a Sweden Study Visa in 2026 from Pakistan

Sweden is becoming a popular choice for Pakistani students who want a high-quality international education in a safe, modern, and student-friendly environment. Known for its innovative teaching style and globally recognised universities, Sweden offers a wide range of English-taught programs, free PhD study, and the chance to stay for up to 12 months after graduation to look for work.

One point to understand from the start: Sweden does not issue a separate “study visa” for longer courses. For studies of more than three months, Pakistani students apply online to the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) for a residence permit for studies, after being admitted to a Swedish university. This guide covers the documents you need, the step-by-step process, and the current fees and timelines.

In this guide:

  1. Requirements for Pakistani Students
  2. Step-by-Step Application Process
  3. Visa Fee & Processing Time

Requirements for Pakistani Students

To apply for a Swedish study visa, Pakistani students need the following documents:

• University Admission Letter: Official admission confirmation from a recognised Swedish university. You count as finally admitted only once any tuition fee has been paid.

• Application Through admissions.se: Programme applications go through the official national portal universityadmissions.se (the Swedish-language version is antagning.se), run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education. A non-EU application fee of SEK 900 applies, and you can choose up to four programmes per round.

• Proof of Funds: Financial evidence showing you can cover tuition fees and living expenses in Sweden. Note: the bank statement must be issued no more than four months before your permit start date.

Pakistani students need a residence permit for studies, not a study visa, to study in Sweden for more than three months. You apply online to the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) after being admitted, and a short entry visa is only used for stays under three months. The residence permit covers your whole study period.
The Sweden residence permit for studies costs SEK 1,500 for adult applicants and SEK 750 for children under 18, paid by card when you submit the online application. Holders of certain scholarships, such as those from the Swedish Institute, are exempt. The fee is not refunded if your application is refused.
The Sweden residence permit for studies has no fixed processing time, but the Migration Agency reports that about 75 percent of recent cases were decided within two months. Apply as soon as you are admitted and have paid any tuition, and submit a complete application, since incomplete files take noticeably longer.
Yes, Pakistani students usually pay any tuition fee before applying for the Sweden residence permit, because you count as finally admitted only once the fee is paid and your university notifies the Migration Agency. Keep the tuition payment receipt, as you attach it to your residence permit application as proof of admission.
Pakistani students give biometrics for the Sweden residence permit by presenting their passport and having fingerprints and a photo taken at the Swedish embassy that handles migration cases for Pakistan, after applying online. In some cases the Migration Agency offers a digital passport check instead. You state your chosen embassy in the application.
Yes, a Sweden student residence permit lets Pakistani students travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for short visits. The permit covers study and residence in Sweden, not work in other countries. Always carry your valid passport and residence permit card when crossing Schengen borders.
