How to Apply for China Study Visa in 2026 from Pakistan

China is a popular destination for Pakistani students because of its affordable tuition fees, globally ranked universities, and scholarship pathways such as the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), administered by the China Scholarship Council. With easy visa categories, X1 vs X2 process, and growing international recognition, studying in China in 2026 is a great option.

Important note: China’s 30-day visa-free entry policy does not apply to ordinary Pakistani passport holders. Only Pakistani diplomatic and official passport holders are visa-exempt. If you hold an ordinary passport, which most students do, you need a visa for any visit, and to study you need an X1 or X2 student visa. Note that being exempt from the visa fee is not the same as being visa-free: Pakistanis pay no Chinese visa fee but still need a visa

In this guide:

  1. Requirements for Pakistani Students
  2. Step-by-Step Application Process
  3. Visa Fee & Processing Time

Requirements for Pakistani Students

To apply for a China study visa (X1/X2 Visa), Pakistani students must have the following documents:

  • Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months with blank visa pages.
  • Admission Letter: Issued by a recognized Chinese university.
  • JW201 or JW202 Form: Official visa application form issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education. JW201 is for government-scholarship (CSC) students; JW202 is for self-funded students.
  • Proof of Funds: Bank statements or a sponsorship letter showing financial capability.
  • Academic Documents:
Matric, Intermediate, Bachelor’s, and transcripts (attested where required).
  • English or Chinese Language Proof: IELTS (if program is in English) or HSK language test results (for Chinese-taught programs).
  • Medical Examination: Foreigner Physical Examination Form (required for X1 visa). It is also needed when converting to a residence permit and costs roughly RMB 622.
  • Police Clearance Certificate: Proof of a clean criminal record. Pakistani students can obtain it via Police Khidmat Markaz or the ICTP app.
  • Visa Application Form: Completed online via COVA and submitted at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (Gerry’s) in Islamabad, Karachi, or Lahore.
  • Photographs: Recent passport-size photos as per Chinese visa specifications.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Choose your program

  • Select a university and course in China. Apply early (6-8 months before intake).

Step 2: Apply and get admission

  • Submit your academic documents and language test scores. Once accepted, you will receive your Admission Letter and JW form.

Step 3: Arrange your finances

  • Prepare proof of funds or apply for scholarships, such as the CSC, if eligible.

Step 4: Prepare your documents

  • Gather all required documents, including a medical certificate and a police clearance.

Step 5: Apply for visa

  • Complete the visa application form online via COVA, then submit it in person at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (Gerry’s).

Step 6: Submit biometrics (if required)

  • Visit the visa center to submit documents and complete biometrics.

Step 7: Wait for processing

  • Visa processing takes a few working days (4-8), depending on the case.

Step 8: Get your visa and travel

  • Once approved, collect your passport and prepare for travel to China. If you hold an X1 visa, apply for a Temporary Residence Permit at the local Exit and Entry Administration within 30 days of arriving. This step is mandatory.

No. Pakistani passport holders are exempt from the Chinese visa fee itself, an exemption the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan lists as valid until 31 December 2026, so you pay only a Gerry’s CVASC service fee.
The X1 visa is for study lasting more than 180 days, such as bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD programs, while the X2 visa covers short courses under 180 days. If you hold an X1, you must convert it into a temporary residence permit within 30 days of arriving in China.
No. China’s 30-day visa-free policy does not include ordinary Pakistani passport holders; only diplomatic and official passport holders are exempt. Most students hold ordinary passports, so you need a visa for any visit, and to study you must hold an X1 or X2 student visa with an admission letter and a JW201 or JW202 form.
A China study visa from Pakistan usually takes about four working days for regular processing, with express (four to eight days) and rush (one day) options for an extra fee. Because slots and document checks can cause delays, apply roughly one month before your travel date.
Start about six to eight months before your intake, since China’s main intakes are September and March, and Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) deadlines often fall between December and April. The CSC can fully fund tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend. Times Consultant study abroad advisors can plan your timeline and scholarship options in a free consultation.
China study visas are most often refused for an incomplete file, especially a missing or incorrect JW201 or JW202 form or admission letter, errors in the medical examination form, weak proof of funds, or inconsistent documents.
