How to Apply for a Portugal Study Visa in 2026 from Pakistan

To study a degree in Portugal from Pakistan, you need a Portuguese residence visa for study, a national (Type D) visa. You apply in person at a VFS Global / Gerry’s visa centre, and the Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad decides. The visa fee is EUR 110 (PKR 36,170) plus a VFS service fee of EUR 38 (PKR 12,493). Key documents are your university acceptance, proof of funds, travel and health insurance, and a police clearance certificate issued within 90 days with an apostille. Processing can take up to around 90 days, so apply as soon as you have your admission.

Portugal is an EU country that follows the Bologna system, so its degrees are recognised across Europe. Universities such as the University of Lisbon, the University of Porto and NOVA University Lisbon are well known for business, engineering, social sciences and technology. Requirements for Pakistani Students

Programmes longer than one year need a residence visa for study; shorter programmes use a temporary stay visa. The Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad does not accept incomplete files or expired attestations, and it can ask for more documents or an interview. Pakistani students need the following:

  • National Visa Application Form: Completed in full and signed, with 2 identical, recent passport-size photos (one attached to the form).
  • Valid Passport: Valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay, with a photocopy of the data page.
  • University Acceptance: Proof that you have been accepted to, or meet the admission criteria of, a higher education institution in Portugal for your study programme.
  • Proof of Means of Support: Portuguese rules (Ordinance 1563/2007) link the required funds to the national minimum wage, which is EUR 920 a month in 2026, about EUR 11,040 for 12 months, on top of tuition. Show bank statements or sponsor documents with a clear source of funds. Scholarship holders can use their award letter instead.
  • Travel and Health Insurance: Valid travel insurance covering medical expenses, urgent medical assistance and repatriation.
  • Police Clearance Certificate: A Pakistani Police Character Certificate issued less than 90 days before you submit, with the Hague Apostille from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Criminal Record Check Authorisation: The signed form allowing Portuguese authorities to check your criminal record in Portugal, available on the VFS website.
  • Academic Documents: Matric and Intermediate certificates attested by IBCC, and degrees with transcripts attested by HEC, apostilled by MOFA.
  • Language Proof: Not a visa document, but most English-taught programmes ask for IELTS, TOEFL or an accepted alternative such as a medium-of-instruction letter. See our IELTS preparation and TOEFL preparation classes.
  • Statement of Purpose: A short study plan explaining your academic background, why you chose this programme in Portugal and your career plans. It should match the rest of your file.
  • Proof of Accommodation: A university residence confirmation or rental agreement. Keep it ready, as the Embassy can ask for it. Our student accommodation services can help.

Note: If your university is officially recognised under Article 91-B of Portugal’s immigration law (Law 23/2007), some documents such as insurance and proof of funds may be waived. Ask your university whether this applies to you.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Select Your Course

  • Choose a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programme at a recognised Portuguese university or polytechnic. Most programmes start in September, with some February intakes. Our study abroad counsellors can help you choose the right programme.

Step 2: Apply to the Institution

  • Submit your attested academic documents, language proof and statement of purpose as your university requires.

Step 3: Receive Your Admission Offer

  • Get your official acceptance letter, and pay any enrolment fee the university asks for.

Step 4: Prepare Your Financial Documents

  • Arrange bank statements or sponsor documents showing funds of about EUR 920 a month for your stay, plus tuition, with a clear and consistent source. Scholarship holders prepare their award letter.

Step 5: Get Your Police Certificate and Insurance

  • Apply for your Police Character Certificate and MOFA apostille close to your submission date, because it must be less than 90 days old. Buy travel insurance that covers medical costs and repatriation.

Step 6: Book Your Appointment with VFS Global

  • Book a national visa appointment through VFS Global Pakistan. Bring every document on the official checklist, because incomplete files are not accepted at the centre.

Step 7: Submit Your Visa Application

  • Attend your appointment in person, give your biometrics, and pay the visa fee and the service fee in cash. The Embassy may call you for an interview.

Step 8: Receive Your Visa and Travel to Portugal

  • Processing can take up to around 90 days. The residence visa is usually valid for 4 months and two entries. After arriving, complete your residence permit process with AIMA (Portugal’s Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum) before the visa expires.
